Automatic transmissions are among the most complicated parts of today's vehicles. However, with regularly scheduled maintenance, they can last the life of the car. Common problem areas include:
- Transmission Fluid - High transmission heat can cause the transmission fluid to break down rapidly. Things like trailer towing, quick starts and stops, mountain driving and wheel spinning on slippery roads are very hard on automatic transmissions.
- Filters - Short trips and stop-and-go driving can cause a build up of foreign matter in transmission fluid. This may require transmission flushing rather than simple draining and replacing old fluid. In this case filters should be replaced.
- Gaskets & Seals - Symptoms of seal leakage may include problems with forward or reverse, rough shifting, or loss of some gear ranges.
- Mechanical: Automatic transmissions can include flywheels, torque converters, transaxles and other parts that can wear from improper use or lack of fluids and may require repair or replacement.
